Liturgy of the Word with Kids
Bringing the Word of God to life for children at Mass
Liturgy of the Word with Kids is a programme that takes place during Sunday Mass. After the Opening Prayer, children are invited to leave the main church with their leaders to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word in a separate space, with the readings and Gospel explained in a way that is engaging and meaningful for young minds. The children return to the main assembly before the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
The programme helps children encounter the Scriptures in a way suited to their age, encouraging them to listen, ask questions and grow in their relationship with God.
Who It Is For
Liturgy of the Word with Kids is open to primary school-aged children attending Sunday Mass. Parents are welcome to accompany younger children. Children are always free to remain with their families in the main church if they prefer.
Volunteering as a Leader
The programme relies on the generosity of parish volunteers who lead the sessions with the children. Leaders do not need to be trained teachers — a love of children and a willingness to share the faith is what matters most. Training and resources are provided.
All leaders are required to hold a current Blue Card and to have completed the Archdiocese of Brisbane’s safeguarding training prior to volunteering.
